Champions League Semifinal – Bayern Munich vs Olympique Lyon

Champions League Semi final Bayern Munich vs Olympique Lyon 2nd Leg, 27th April, 2010

It was the 2nd and the deciding leg of the Champions League semi final between Bayern Munich and Olympique Lyon. It was being played at O Lyon’s home ground. Bayern had a 1-0 home win from the 1st leg to their advantage, but their star midfielder and playmaker Frank Ribery was out of this fixture as he was shown a straight Red Card in the 1st leg which had ruled him out of this match also.

Bayern Munich were the favourites of the 2 sides to get to the finals, but then nobody could rule Lyon, as they had shockingly thrashed Real Madrid out of this tournament earlier, at Madrid’s home ground! So, nothing could have been guessed about this match before the start, even though O Lyon are a relatively much weaker side.

The game started at a good pace, and Bayern had a few early chances to open the scoring. Their first chance came in the 3rd minute itself, when Bayern forward Olic won the ball down the right side in a tussle with the Lyon defender, made a run in the box, and then made a low cross in the box. The ball came to Mueller (Bayern Munich) inside the box. He was unmarked and was in a great position to score, but he missed the chance as he hit the ball wide of the goal post. Bayern Munich continued to attack, and till the first 15 minutes, it was only one way traffic, with Munich doing all the attack, and Lyon somehow trying to stop them.

O Lyon looked like coming back into the game and they had half chances on counter attack, but it was Bayern who were still dominating the play. As both teams looked to find the opening goal, the game opened up and picked up pace. However there were 2 yellow cards shown in quick succession, one to Bayern player and other to Lyon’s that reduced the pace the game was going on at. Arjen Robben, Bayern’s only goal scorer in the 1st leg, looked to create chances whenever he got the ball. He showed good skill to get pass Lyon defenders, and then to setup forward Olic. But he fumbled the first time, and his shot was blocked for a throw in form the left side. Bayern took the throw quickly. Robben was the target from the throw; he passed the ball to Mueller, who found Olic in the box. He made no mistake this time, and fired in a good shot from around 10 yards out to score the opening goal of the night. The goal shook up O Lyon, and they were now venturing forward. In the 30th min Lyon winger played a good cross, to find Bastos (Lyon) in the box. Bastos took the shot on the volley, but his shot was awfully off target. Both teams were creating more chances and the game switched onto more attacking form.

In the 41st min Bayern had another good opportunity. Bayern left back Altintop carried the ball forward from close to his own penalty box to Lyon’s half, and then passed the ball to Robben who was free. He was clean on goal, but was given offside quite late by the linesman, when he actually was not! The half came to an end with Bayern leading 1-0.

Second half started with some hope for Lyon who were better in their attack then in the 1st half. They were creating a few opportunities but Bayern’s defence was not easy for them to break. O Lyon were hoping that their star player Delgado could provide something, but every time he got the ball in a good position, he was not good enough to make anything out of it. And after some time passed in the second half, Bayern were back to attacking. Schweinsteiger had a good chance form outside the box, after Robben set him up. But he could not beat the keeper from long range. In 57th min Robben had a great shot on goal from a similar position from which he scored in the 1st leg, but this time his shot was saved by the keeper. The real blow to O Lyon came in the 60th min when their captain and centre back Cris was shown 2 Yellow cards in quick succession which made him leave the field, and left Lyon to 10 men. It meant their defence was quite vulnerable now, and Bayern took full advantage of it. In the 67th minute Bayern found their 2nd goal and Olic was the man who scored again. The game was now over for Lyon, as they needed to score at least 4 goals with one man less in 20 minutes. They had their chances, but none of them was good enough to beat the Bayern defence. Bayern continued to attack, and Olic scored his hat trick with a header in the 78th minute. Score line 3-0. The game came to an end with no further changes in the score line. Bayern won the semis 4-0 on aggregate to reach the finals of the Champions League.
