MLS Round-up – May 8th

As the Major League Soccer season continues to roll along, the weekend of May 8th saw plenty of exciting action. There were seven matches played on Saturday, with five of the seven resulting in shut-outs. The weekend was match day 7 in the season. The MLS season moves all the way through the middle of October, so the season still remains young for all teams.

Landon Donovan continued his impressive play assisted on three goals and scored the fourth goal as LA handed Seattle their worst home defeat. Los Angeles scored in four of their seven shots on goal.

Real Salt Lake blanked Philadelphia to keep the Union struggling. Kyle Beckerman, Jamison Olave and Chris Seitz all scored goals to aid RSL’s win.

In probably the game of the day, the Columbus Crew edged the New England Revolution 3-2. Robbie Rogers scored first the first time since August, in a dramatic stoppage time goal to win the game. Zak Boggs made his first start in the MLS, scoring two goals for the Revolution. They are now winless in their last five games.

Jeff Cunningham scored the games lone goal for FC Dallas to give them a 1-0 win over D.C. United. The goal came in the 68th minute from teammates Heath Pearce and David Ferreira.

The San Jose Earthquakes made quick and easy work of the New York Red Bulls, as they scored four goals. The Earthquakes played with a one man advantage for more than 75 minutes of the game. San Jose’s forward Ryan Johnson got the scoring started just before half.

Houston Dynamo picked up another win; this time over Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center. Brad Davis was the star of the game for Houston, scoring a goal and adding an assist in the win.

This weekend will feature one Thursday game and seven games on Saturday. The Thursday match will feature the Houston Dynamo against Real Salt Lake. Saturday will see FC Dallas and the Philadelphia Union at 4pm EST. San Jose Earthquakes and New England Revolution will play at 6pm EST. The Colorado Rapids and D.C. United, along with Chivas USA at Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders FC and New York Red Bulls will get together at 7:30pm EST. The final two games of the night will feature the Chicago Fire at Kansas City Wizards; 8:30 and Toronto FC at Los Angeles Galaxy at 10:30pm.

The Los Angeles Galaxy continues to lead the entire MLS with 22 points. They have won 7, lost 0 and tied in 1 game this season. Next, the leader in the Eastern Conference – New York Red Bulls. New York is 5-2-0 for a total of 15 points.
